When it comes to asset management there is a lot to consider, and statutory compliance should be top of the list to ensure the enterprise is meeting its legislative obligations. Not having a clear understanding of the requirements or adequate strategies in place is a high-risk proposition.

Navigating the requirements can be a minefield, especially when you have a wide range of assets or a diverse range of responsibilities to manage in your day-to-day role. Some examples of items that require some level of routine maintenance, inspection, and testing to be deemed compliant include:

  • Overhead Cranes
  • Gantry Cranes
  • Jib Cranes
  • Davit Cranes
  • Davit Bases
  • Boiler and Pressure vessels
  • Fall arrest anchor points
  • Lifting Beams (Monorails)
  • Lifting Gear
  • Winches

Industrial Plant Compliance and Standards

In fact, most industrial plant and installations are covered under some form of published standard, code, regulation, or guideline which all form part of the “body of knowledge” under the WHS Act. There are also requirements for certain items of plant to have design and/or plant registration, and the onus is on the end user to have these records on file.

How EnterpriseIS Can Help You Navigate Compliance

The good news is that the team at EnterpriseIS can help you navigate this minefield to see you come out the other side with a clear understanding of the requirements that relate to your enterprise, and an effective strategy to ensure compliance is achieved and maintained, freeing your people up to do what they do best.

To illustrate this, EnterpriseIS were recently engaged by a client to undertake a detailed compliance assessment of over 600 assets across their network.

Key Findings from the Compliance Assessment

The assessment identified more than 120 non-compliances, some minor and some requiring more a concerted effort to address. It was also found that having assets incorrectly classified in the first instance can see them being maintained to the wrong standards, which can lead to both under and over inspection. Overhead and Gantry Cranes are a classic example of asset types found to be incorrectly classified.

Aligning Statutory Obligations with PM and RCM Approaches

Once clear around statutory obligations for assets, it’s important to review if the PM and RCM approaches align with these requirements. Flagging these critical activities in your CMMS will assist in identifying the higher priority tasks in the weekly schedule.

How long has it been since you last took a close look at your legislative assets to ensure the required statutory maintenance is included in the strategy, planned and executed?
