The Challenge
Our client’s operations wanted to refocus the business on developing an aligned understanding across the organisation in the application of standardised Maintenance Management methodologies and practices.
At the time, understanding and capability in Maintenance Management were strongest within the Asset Management teams, who interacted with the shift teams on a daily basis to execute planned maintenance activities. The shift teams, however, were not aligned in their understanding of the importance of completing the tasks requested by the Asset Management teams. This resulted in a low schedule compliance rate for planned maintenance tasks.
The Solution
It was decided to facilitate a series of Maintenance Awareness Workshops for site personnel.
The intention of these workshops was to develop alignment in the understanding of what maintenance is, and to demonstrate the link between the everyday maintenance activities performed by shift team members and how these activities support the site’s maintenance planning processes.
The Maintenance Awareness Program was delivered using a structured three‑stage approach.
Program Delivery Approach
Stage 1: Develop Workshop Content
The workshop learning materials were developed with focus on the following key areas:
- What is Maintenance?
- Why do we do Maintenance?
- How do we do Maintenance?
- How can you contribute to Maintenance?
- What do we expect to achieve from our Maintenance activities?
Stage 2: Tailor Content to Audience
The workshop content was then tailored to suit the intended audience groups, including:
- Shift Maintenance
- Operations
- Engineering
- Other relevant site personnel
Stage 3: Facilitate Workshop Delivery
The workshops were facilitated and delivered to nominated personnel across six (6) sessions, with approximately 15 personnel per workshop.
Results Achieved
The Maintenance Awareness Program delivered the following outcomes:
- Input into the program content was achieved from more than 90% of site personnel
- Cross‑shift communication improved almost immediately
- Maintenance schedule compliance improved by 32% following completion of the workshop program
