Maintenance Process Audit for a Major Iron Ore Mining Operation

Client Challenge
This organisation was a key operational service contractor to our client.
As a result of poor equipment performance and inability to achieve targets, our client wanted to obtain a greater understanding of the ‘health’ of the local Maintenance function within the organisation, currently managing the fleet of equipment on site.
Maintenance Process Audit Approach
An EnterpriseIS team member was engaged to conduct an evaluation of the service contractors’ Maintenance Work Management processes and systems.
The Maintenance Evaluation consisted of the following steps:
- Three day facilitated Maintenance Evaluation covering:
- A launch session covering the key aspects of the Maintenance Evaluation
- An overview of the process and elements
- Multiple question and answer sessions, including scoring (various audiences)
- Evidence gathering (based on answers gathered)
- Data review and gap analysis
- Presentation on the Maintenance Evaluation findings:
- Evaluation feedback / scores
- List of recommendations
- Detailed action planning
- Provision of a comprehensive report outlining the process, findings, recommendations and action plan.
The Results
A 25-point, two-stage improvement plan was recommended.
The initial stage focused on the areas that would help address the repeat equipment failures.
The second stage would help establish sound Maintenance Work business processes that would drive structure and accountability in managing the Maintenance function.
