The Challenge
Our client’s operations had a number of projects identified to support an effort for Rail Throughput Improvement.
These projects resided in a number of different repositories (e.g. spread sheets, databases, word documents, etc.).
Given the nature of the repositories of projects, no structure or formal prioritisation had been applied to enable them to be placed into a single project pipeline for planning and execution.
There was an imminent need to provide support for the validation and prioritisation of the current improvement activities into a single project pipeline ready for implementation.
The Solution
We assisted our client by providing a Business Improvement and Sustainability Specialist to:
- Validate the current list of projects that had been identified
- Develop a prioritisation process to rank the improvement opportunities
- Facilitate a project prioritisation workshop to provide an agreed, prioritised list of improvement opportunities
- Project manage the implementation of the improvement opportunities on site
- Track all of the delays, post implementation to validate and quantify the improvements implemented.
The Results
- The business now receives live train location / status data directly from the load point from their rail provider
- The Rail Log Report and Wagon Fault Log were made available remotely and automatically updated daily
- Removed three delay points through streamlining the Train Receival process
- Automated the “Grain Wagon” tipping and the Cargo Confirmation process, which were previously completed manually
