(How we can turn old industrial land into green spaces again)
“What do we do with rusting steel giants and a 200-hectare industrial wasteland?”
– Professor Peter Latz, Duisburg-Nord Landschaftspark
The remediation of decommissioned industrial sites has long been an issue for the owners and local communities. Much of the issue is the cost of remediation, however, where the site can be transformed for an alternate use, these costs are manageable.
As asset management professionals, our role is to assist clients. Not only achieve the best return on their assets whilst they are in operation, but also to ensure the business manages the effective disposal of the assets at the end of their life.
Understanding what options may be available to sites when they reach the end of their operational life will help us to develop future use plans for these sites, to offset the costs of remediation, but also to add value to the community and environment.
Examples of where this has been done effectively included the Eden Project in Cornwall, UK (https://www.edenproject.com/eden-story). The Landshaftspark in Duisburg-Meiderich, Germany (https://www.landschaftspark.de/en/). A great example of where the sites have been turned into green spaces that are now open to the public as recreational and educational facilities.
Currently the team from The Eden Project are looking at undertaking a similar project in Australia, as a joint project with Alcoa at the old Anglesea coal mine that was closed in 2015.
