On returning to work this week it has been interesting to reflect on the Mainstream conference. What were the key messages and what lessons can we take with us on our next project? Asset Management is a constantly-evolving field, which provides the backbone for the successful operation of any business. Whilst the focus is often on the development of new technology, whether it be a new form of information management, drones, enhanced analytics or improved data gathering, it always comes back to people to make these solutions work. In any organisation, it is the Asset Management champions who shoulder responsibility for the performance of the assets and ultimately, must live with the outcomes.
In our discussions with a broad range of AM practitioners at Mainstream, it was evident that the role of people continues to be vital as organisations seek to maximise the value of their assets through the implementation of new technologies, whilst meeting the challenges of operating in today’s fast-moving marketplace. Effective asset management is not as simple as moving from one project to the next. It is an ongoing commitment to understanding the condition of your assets, what they need to operate in a manner that delivers maximum value to the business and how to engage the operations/maintenance teams to deliver the necessary support. The establishment of a proactive workplace culture which incorporates the ongoing management of assets throughout their lifecycle, is a critical step in this process and will continue to be a challenge for leaders as we move forward in these “interesting times”.
