The adoption of strategy as a guideline for managing a business has developed over the past century to become almost universally accepted today. Many of today’s leading businesses have achieved their success by starting with effective strategy, developing the capability to implement it and continually supporting it with a culture that drives the workforce to deliver. In order to track the effectiveness of strategy, the use of metrics is commonly accepted as the best way to measure our success, whether it be at the executive level or on the shop floor.
However, there are times when the metrics can over ride strategy to drive behaviours that are counter productive and even destructive. Being aware of the “Surrogation Snare” is important if we are to manage the delivery of strategy effectively, as outlined in this article on Performance Measurement by Michael Harris and Bill Tyler from Harvard Business Review.
As Asset Management and Operational Excellence professionals, we see effective strategies used to great effect across a broad range of industries, but we also see businesses that become beholden to their metrics at the expense of delivering their higher level strategic visions. If you are looking to review your company strategy with a view to improving the way your business operates and maintains it’s assets, we’re here to help.
