Electric power generation has been used throughout the mining industry for fixed and mobile plant for a number of years. With improvements in battery technology we are starting to see a new generation of electrically powered vehicles being developed, including the 45-ton haul being developed by Kuhn.
The truck is a standard haul truck, which has been retrofitted with motors and a 600-kWh lithium-ion pack that stores power from regenerative braking as the vehicle descends into the pit. Current trials have shown the vehicle will off-set 50,000 tons of diesel through the use of a combination of grid power and on-board regeneration.
