Critical Spares Audit – Case StudyResource Company - Pilbara, WA, Australia
The Challenge
Our client wanted assurance that their $50 million worth of spares would be in a’fit-for-service’ condition and operate reliably when they needed them most.
Their main concerns were spares would be found in poor condition, or fail prematurely once installed due to:
- Poor preservation standards
- Poor storage methods
- Limited in-storage maintenance activities
- Site environment conditions
They reached out for help in auditing their critical spares inventory to understand their current condition and help develop a remediation and sustainable preservation program.
The Solution
The team at EnterpriseIS worked with the client to tailor a solution geared to their extensive inventory and diverse site conditions.
The solution consisted of 5 phases being,
- Phase 1: Develop a tool to assess condition of critical spares.
- Phase 2: Physical audit of critical spares across all sites.
- Phase 3: Review the clients Material Preservation Standard.
- Phase 4: Development of targeted ‘maintenance-in-storage’ tactics.
- Phase 5: Deliver a detailed and configurable report available for tracking rectification of non-conformance
The Results
Over 1800 individual assets worth some $53.8m were audited to find that 56% or some $40m worth failed to comply with the client’s own preservation standards.
Of these items, 25% or $14 million worth were deemed as unacceptable, yet available to be placed into service.
The data gathered coupled with the experience of the EnterpriseIS team enabled targeted preservation tactics and sound recommendations to be developed.
The level of detail provided in the reporting tool has equipped our client to make data-driven decisions concerning their assets in storage.
The overall solution has provided our client with the capability to achieve its goal of a sustainable asset preservation program; so their spares will work when they need them most!
